I got 15/15 in three songs but then guessed only 3/5 in the second one and 1/5 in the last one. So is there a research that would test various bitrates and give an answer in percentages regarding how many people can hear the difference?ĮDIT1: I did the test again and this time got 76% correct answers in 128kb/s vs flac. That's one file though and that's pretty much the only part based on which I can tell the two apart. I can hear that the reverb/echo after "which way you're going" cuts more abruptly in the more compressed file. Interestingly, I can pass this test regarding 128kb/s vs 320kb/s: Yet I wasn't able to tell 128kb/s and flac apart. I think I have good hearing, I can hear all frequencies from slightly below 20hz to slightly above 20khz, I can distinguish 0.5db difference in volume, and I can hear harmonic distortions down to 0.01%. If my room was perfectly quiet, I was in the right mood, I knew what to look for, the songs selection was particular enough and the volume was high (above my limit of comfort) then I can imagine myself passing 128kb/s test, maybe even 160kb/s. I'm using Sundara and Zen Can+Fiio e10k combo. My own experience is that I couldn't even tell 128kb/s mp3 and flac apart in this test ĩ6kb/s was super easy but with 128kb's I got a score no better than if I was choosing randomly. Only one good pair of headphones and possibly an amp are needed. Did anyone test this properly? Seems to me that it would be fairly easy to test and it would silence a lot of internet discussions. I'm talking about actual research results not self reports, reddit posts etc.
